Blossoming trees, the harbingers of spring, are the epitome of hope and new life. For Vincent van Gogh they were something very special. He skilfully expressed his fascination in his artwork "Almond Tree" which is beautifully and intricately expressed in this Blue Mug.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created approximately 2100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life.

Today his paintings belong to the most expensive of the world - but he spent his life in extreme poverty and financial dependency. Vincent van Gogh was a desperate man but an obsessed artist, never reached in genius - an exception - like his vigorous paintings that seem to sparkle from inside.

The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby son, Vincent Willem. In the letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: ‘As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.’ Unsurprisingly, it was this work that remained closest to the hearts of the Van Gogh family.
